DESCRIPTION:
This dramatic illustration of an Auriculas plant is from Robert John Thornton’s "The Temple of Flora". It was first published in London in 1799 as a portfolio of 33 color prints. These prints were more like artistic portraits than simple botanical illustrations, with each plant set in a highly romantic landscape. Today Thornton's prints are considered some of the most remarkable botanical plates ever published.
