DESCRIPTION:
This colorful illustration of a Papilio Panthous (butterfly) is plate 18 from a book titled "Insects of India" by Edward Donovan, first published in London in 1800. The book illustrated the natural history of the insects of India and the islands in the Indian seas. It contained 250 colorful butterfly and insect plates. It is interesting to note that Donovan never ventured beyond London, yet created exquisite drawings of exotic insects purchased mainly at auctions of specimens brought back from England's voyages of exploration.
