The plague doctors in the middle ages wore beak-like masks filled with aromatic herbs and flowers to protect them from "putrid air," which was believed to be the cause of deadly infections. The wand was used to poke and prod the dying. The costume as described in “Treatise on the Plague” by Diemerbroeck in 1636
