DESCRIPTION:

This is a rare illustration of a Rhinoceros engrave by Enea Vico, an Italian artist in 1548. It was based on an even earlier woodcut known as "Dürer's Rhinoceros" by the German painter and printmaker, Albrecht Dürer in 1515. What's interesting about this print is that Dürer had never seen a real rhinoceros. The woodcut show hard armor plates with rivets along the seams, twisted horn and scaly legs, none of which is anatomically correct. Despite this, it was popular and regarded as realistic into the late 18th century. It is now said "probably no animal picture has exerted such a profound influence on the arts".
